i respect people who want to keep their menstruation to themselves but i have to make it everyone’s problem. Literally if it was socially acceptable to lead every conversation with “I’m menstruating” i would.
i do like the hunger games movies — like, as far as book adaptations go, things were relatively good — but they were WRONG for not including the little bit of haymitch’s backstory in the catching fire movie. the pieces of haymitch’s backstory that the books gave us offered a LOT of insight into his motivations and the way he trusts & understands katniss irrevocably. haymitch’s games were a quarter quell, too. he lost an ally, too. and more importantly, he was the first person to realize that the force fields that surround the arenas are deadly, and he used that to his advantage and won the games as a result. his actions were seen as an act of rebellion by the capitol, and so snow had his family killed. the next, and only other person to ever do this — to use the force field as a weapon — was katniss. she didn’t come up with the idea on her own. she got it from witnessing clips of haymitch’s games. and she knew what it could cost, and she did it anyway. and that was what officially set the wheels of the rebellion into motion. it was a flame that haymitch had sparked years ago, even if it wasn’t a conscious intention. at the time of his own games, the people weren’t ready to unify and rebel as a cohesive unit, but once katniss used his same method, they were. the parallels between haymitch and katniss run deep, and he trusts her irrevocably. he knew exactly what she was about to do when she said “yes” in the tributes meeting, and he stood behind her immediately. haymitch is arguably the one and only person who understands katniss in her entirety. he has felt the same grief, undergone the same tragedies, and held the same passion that begged for a better world.
One thing I really love about seedy anime websites and YouTube mp3 converters is like. They actually do what they say they’re doing. But they WILL try to trick you into downloading a virus. it sucks that this is not considered saying the quiet part out loud tbh bc like. this is blatantly antisemitic. it’s very cut and dry “jews are all responsible for what israel is doing so as punishment you should be stripped of your culture or forced to practice in private” like????? that is VERY mask off, but antisemitism has been so intensely normalized that most people will read this as just harmless disagreement or ignorance instead of the malice and prejudice it is. it’s. honestly kinda depressing.
thinking about how the hunger games were designed to prove that without society, order, government, someone to rule, we devolve into little more than animals, and how the games themselves prove over and over again that this is not true. We see it in every single game we witness.
Katniss placing flowers around Rue’s body in the arena. Thresh sparing Katniss because she was kind to Rue, even though he was making it that much harder for himself to win.
Haymitch going back for Maysilee after hearing her scream even though their alliance had been broken. Haymitch holding her as she dies the same way Katniss did Rue.
Coral’s “I can’t have killed them all for nothing” when she realizes she’s not going home. Lamina cutting down Marcus at great personal risk. And, my favorite moment in tbosas, Reaper collecting the bodies of his fellow tributes, his peers, even the ones who tried to kill him, into a pile. Taking the weapons from their hands. Closing their eyes and crossing their arms in the best approximation of a proper burial he can manage, covering them with the Capitol flag as a makeshift shroud.
The Games bring out the worst in people, yes. But despite the extreme circumstances, despite the exterior pressure of the Capitol, despite the fact that it could mean pain and heartbreak and death, it also shows that people have an enormous capacity for goodness. That even in a situation purposefully designed to make empathy impossible, people can’t help but have it anyway.
Snow looks at the Games and all he can see is what’s inside himself– this pure animalistic drive to conquer and defeat. He kills and it feels good and he thinks that everyone else must feel that way too. He doesn’t realize (maybe can’t realize) that he is the exception, not the rule. He cannot see outside himself, outside his own warped perspective, to realize that the fact that people do show humanity in the games proves his entire worldview wrong.
